A Man has been Convicted of Raping and Murdering an Irish Backpacker in India.

A local resident, Vikat Bhagat, was found guilty by the District and Sessions Court in South Goa on Friday. The lifeless body of Ms. McLaughlin was discovered by a farmer in March 2017 in a remote area of Deobagh, a location frequented by tourists.

The post-mortem examination revealed that the 28-year-old woman from County Donegal had been both raped and strangled.

In a statement, Ms. McLaughlin’s mother and sister expressed that justice had “finally been achieved.”

“There were no other suspects or accomplices in Danielle’s death; Vikat Bhagat was entirely responsible for the brutal end to her beautiful life,” stated her mother, Andrea Brannigan, along with her sister, Joleen McLaughlin Brannigan.

“We have faced what has essentially been an eight-year-long murder trial, fraught with numerous delays and challenges, all occurring thousands of miles away from Danielle’s home.”
