A court in Hong Kong sentenced veteran democrat Lam Cheuk-ting and six other individuals to multiple years in prison for rioting, following an assault by a group of men in white shirts during the pro-democracy protests in the summer of 2019.
On the night of July 21, 2019, over 100 men in white shirts invaded the Yuen Long MTR station in the northwestern part of the city, attacking bystanders and journalists with sticks and clubs.
Twelve of the attackers in white shirts were found guilty of rioting and conspiring to inflict injury with intent.
However, Lam, 47, a long-time member of the Democratic Party, along with six others, were also apprehended and charged with rioting and inciting violence.

Lam and the other defendants contended during their mitigation that they acted in self-defense and aimed to protect those who were being attacked.
Yet, district court judge Stanley Chan dismissed their claims of self-defense.
