British police have formally charged actor and comedian Russell Brand with rape and multiple counts of assault stemming from various allegations made between 1999 and 2005, according to a statement released on Friday.
At 50 years old, Brand, who was previously married to U.S. pop star Katy Perry and was once a prominent figure in British comedy and broadcasting, has recently shifted his focus to becoming an internet social commentator.
The police report indicates that Brand, a resident of Oxfordshire in southern England, faces charges including one count of rape, one count of indecent assault, one count of oral rape, and two counts of sexual assault, all involving four different women.
“The investigation by the Metropolitan Police is ongoing, and detectives encourage anyone who has been impacted by this case or possesses relevant information to reach out to law enforcement,” the statement added.

In 2023, the Sunday Times and Channel 4’s documentary series “Dispatches” revealed that four women had accused Brand of sexual assaults, including one instance of rape, occurring between 2006 and 2013.
Brand has previously asserted that he has never engaged in non-consensual sexual activity.
