On Tuesday, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi called on Britain and the European Union to protect multilateral trading systems, as China seeks to garner support from its trading partners in response to U.S. tariff actions.
Wang communicated with British Foreign Secretary David Lammy via phone, emphasizing that both China and Britain have a duty to maintain international order against what he described as ‘widespread unilateral aggression,’ according to a statement from the Chinese foreign ministry. He expressed China’s readiness to collaborate with Britain to ‘remove all obstacles,’ stressing that both nations must work together to uphold multilateral trading systems.
In a separate conversation with Austrian Foreign Minister Beate Meinl-Reisinger, Wang reiterated that China and the EU should take on international responsibilities to protect multilateral trade and foster an open global economy. He also indicated China’s willingness to enhance high-level interactions with the EU.
