Tit-for-Tat: Russia Bans 21 British Lawmakers

On Wednesday, Russia expanded its list of UK nationals prohibited from entering the country by adding 21 British parliamentarians, highlighting the deteriorating relations with London. Moscow keeps comprehensive lists of foreign officials, business leaders, journalists, and others who are barred from entering Russia, primarily from nations classified as ‘unfriendly.’ In a statement, the Russian Foreign Ministry indicated that the lawmakers in question had made ‘hostile statements and unfounded accusations’ against the country.

The list includes six members of the House of Lords and 15 members from various political parties, including the governing Labour Party, the centrist Liberal Democrats, the Scottish National Party, and the Northern Irish Democratic Unionist Party.

The UK has joined other Western nations in imposing severe economic sanctions on Russia due to its actions in Ukraine and continues to be one of Ukraine’s most significant supporters. Recently, Russia has increasingly directed its criticism towards London, especially as its relations with the U.S. have improved since President Donald Trump took office in January.
