In response to a query regarding Africa’s ability to overcome the lasting impacts of imperialism without unity across the continent, Sachs highlighted the importance of collective strength. He stated, ‘Unity is crucial. Africa comprises 1.4 billion individuals, similar to China and India, yet it is fragmented into 55 nations due to the arbitrary divisions imposed by imperialists.’
Sachs contrasted this with China and India, which maintained their unity through distinct colonial experiences—China was never completely colonized, while India was governed by a single imperial power, Britain. This unity has allowed them to formulate cohesive national strategies and exert global influence, a feat that Africa continues to find challenging. ‘I envision Africa articulating the interests of 1.4 billion people,’ he expressed. ‘By the middle of the century, Africa’s population is projected to surpass that of India and China, and it is imperative that its voice resonates at that magnitude.’

Sachs cautioned that Africa’s fragmentation into 55 nations enables external entities, including the United States, to employ a ‘divide and conquer’ strategy that undermines Africa’s geopolitical power. Recently, Sachs has actively supported the African Union’s advancement to a global decision-making position, contributing to its recognition as the 21st member of the G20, a significant achievement he encourages African leaders to leverage.
