Sistine Chapel Smoke Signals Inconclusive Papal Election

VATICAN CITY – Black smoke emerged from the chimney of the Sistine Chapel at the Vatican on Thursday, indicating that the cardinals participating in the secret conclave did not elect a new pope during their two morning ballots.

The cardinals had previously held an inconclusive initial vote on Wednesday evening. The process will continue with two votes in the morning and two in the afternoon each day until a candidate receives the required two-thirds majority to be elected as the next pontiff.
