Unproven Claims: Are Activist’s Attacks on Tinubu’s Son Fair?

Nigerian social commentator and activist Martins Vincent Otse, known as VeryDarkMan (VDM), has renewed his social media campaign against Seyi Tinubu, the son of Nigeria’s President, Bola Ahmed Tinubu. The latest accusations stem from claims made by Atiku Isah, President of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), who alleged he was abducted and assaulted – accusations that VDM has repeatedly amplified and linked to Seyi Tinubu without clear, verifiable evidence.

VDM, known for his outspoken advocacy, has positioned himself as a voice of the oppressed. However, his recent barrage against Seyi Tinubu raises questions about due process, fairness, and the potential for misinformation.

While holding those in power accountable is essential, upholding truth and integrity in public discourse is equally crucial. To date, no credible evidence has linked Seyi Tinubu to the alleged assault. Multiple sources close to the matter have maintained that Seyi Tinubu was not involved in any such incident, nor did he orchestrate any attack on the NANS president.

Sources familiar with Seyi Tinubu’s activities describe him as a youth advocate and philanthropist, focused on supporting educational and entrepreneurial initiatives across Nigeria, rather than political intimidation or violence.

VDM’s arrest on May 2, 2025, by security operatives, further complicates the situation. Though he was released on administrative bail five days later, his continued use of unproven accusations risks damaging reputations and diverting public attention from fact-based activism.

It is essential to emphasize that calls for accountability must respect due process and avoid unfounded allegations. Public figures like Seyi Tinubu deserve the right to a fair hearing and the presumption of innocence.

In the current media landscape, responsible reporting and social media engagement are paramount. As citizens seek justice and good governance, the truth must remain the foundation of all advocacy.
