Putin Visits Kursk Region After Ukrainian Forces Ejected

Russian President Vladimir Putin visited the western Kursk region on Tuesday, marking his first visit since Russian forces ejected Ukrainian troops from the area last month.

According to the Kremlin, Putin met with volunteer organizations in the region and visited the Kursk-II nuclear power plant during his visit.

State television showed Putin meeting with volunteers and local officials, including acting governor Alexander Khinshtein. He was accompanied by Sergei Kiriyenko, the Kremlin’s first deputy chief of staff.

Russia announced in late April that it had pushed Ukrainian troops out of the Kursk region, ending what it described as the largest incursion into Russian territory since World War Two.

On August 6, just over two years after Russia’s 2022 invasion, Ukraine launched a significant attack, breaching the Russian border into the Kursk region, supported by drones and heavy Western weaponry.

At the height of the incursion, Ukrainian forces claimed control of nearly 1,400 square kilometers of Kursk.
