Vietnam Restricts Access to Telegram Over Illegal Content Concerns

Vietnamese authorities have ordered internet and telecommunications companies to begin restricting access to the Telegram messaging app, citing its use for illegal activities such as fraud, drug trafficking, and the dissemination of anti-government messages.

The Ministry of Public Security alleges that Telegram has failed to cooperate with Vietnamese officials in removing illegal content and has not registered its business in the country as required by law.

This action is part of a broader effort by the Vietnamese government to tighten control over digital platforms operating within its borders.

While Vietnam has permitted global services like Facebook and YouTube to operate, it has also demanded greater control over online content.

In 2023, the government implemented regulations requiring social media companies to verify users and provide information upon request.

Critics argue that these restrictions could limit freedom of speech. However, government officials maintain that the measures are necessary to safeguard public order and combat online criminal activity.

Telegram has not yet issued a response to the restrictions.
