The Coronation Street wedding of Dev Alahan (Jimmi Harkishin) and Bernie Winter (Jane Hazlegrove) was a typically dramatic affair, as everything that could go wrong did go wrong. And the drama isn’t over.
The wedding itself was a rush job, brought forward so that Bernie could try to help Aadi (Adam Hussain) out of his debt situation by skimming off some of the wedding money Dev had received from his Aunt Rani (Josephine Lloyd-Welcome).
On the big day, Bernie made it down the aisle after a series of setbacks, only to dramatically collapse and have to be rushed to hospital. She was discovered to have had an allergic reaction to the flowers in her bouquet, which brought on an asthma attack.
As their worried family members gathered at her bedside, Bernie and Dev exchanged vows and wedding rings and their family pronounced them husband and wife. In the end, it was a wedding that was as unconventional as Bernie herself.

There was no time for the newly married couple to relax, though, as soon after that Aadi decided he had to come clean to his dad about the debts he racked up while running the business while Dev was in India.
This meant that Bernie also had to confess about her plan to use the wedding money to help Aadi out. Dev was surprisingly understanding, and it was obvious how besotted he is with his new wife.
Further complications ensued when Aadi came clean about being to blame for Lauren (Cait Fitton) taking drugs at his party, as the drugs were meant for him. Lauren was furious with him, as was Dev who decided to send his son to India to start a new life and a new job.

In upcoming episodes Bernie tried to persuade Dev to give her grandson Brody (Ryan Mulvey) a job at the shop, but a disgruntled Aadi reveals it was Brody who brought the drugs to the party.
There’s obviously a lot going on, so Bernie has a suggestion for Dev. She reckons they should postpone their honeymoon while he uses the time to mend his relationship with Aadi.
Dev agrees that he needs to patch things up with his son, but he has an idea. He thinks Bernie badly needs a rest after everything that’s been going on, so he suggests she goes on the holiday alone. Bernie’s grateful for his thoughtfulness and makes plans to leave.

With Bernie heading off for a bit of peace and quiet, will we see her back in Weatherfield any time soon?
Jane Hazlegrove told us, ‘That’s what is so brilliant about Coronation Street, you don’t know what you’re going to get until you open the page of the script.
‘The writers throw all kinds of things at you and you just hope and pray you give credence and justice to whatever they’ve written. Who knows what Bernie is going to do next? That’s why I love playing her.’
