Hundreds of flights have been grounded at major UK airports after the air traffic control service experienced a ‘technical issue’.

Problems at Swanwick Centre, which manages air traffic over much of England and Wales, have impacted a range of flights.

London’s airspace has been closed to flights for safety reasons, with the departure board for Heathrow now completely blank.

NATS, the air traffic control provider, said while the issue has been resolved, ‘we cannot say how long it will be before operations are back to normal’.
