Many are urging the council to stop the library changes.

Officials will hear appeals next week to preserve four Coventry libraries that may be relocated. A significant number of residents have urged the council to keep the services in Bell Green, Canley, Coundon, and Holbrooks in their current locations. One petition, supported by nearly 200 individuals, emphasizes that libraries serve as the “heart of the community” and provide safe spaces.

The city council is contemplating this relocation as part of its cost-saving measures outlined in the 2024 budget. The proposal suggests moving the libraries to join other council services at various venues, including a leisure center. According to council officials, three of the libraries would be shifted to smaller facilities, resulting in a reduced collection of books.

This potential change is part of the authority’s strategy to achieve annual savings of £3-4 million. Numerous petitions opposing the relocations have emerged, including one concerning the Holbrooks site, which has garnered over 400 signatures. Residents have expressed “grave concerns” regarding the impact of these plans, particularly on children, families, and individuals with disabilities. The petitions also argue that relocating the libraries would likely decrease visitor numbers.

Council officials indicated that a decision regarding these changes could be implemented “as early as possible in 2025,” although it may extend to 2027. A report prepared for the council, released prior to the meeting on Tuesday, stated: “We aim to provide positive and integrated experiences for individuals accessing services, ensuring that needs and issues are identified and addressed promptly and effectively.”
