Media students have applied their skills by organizing and hosting a live event at a local library. The Book Clurb will take place at Ipswich County Library on February 5, featuring an invited audience and streamed by Suffolk New College (SNC) from 19:00 to 20:00 GMT.
This year’s event, which celebrates the 20th anniversary of SNC’s inaugural live production, will see students assume various roles, including live hosting, camera operation, publicity, production, and event planning. Carrisa Hawkins, a student presenter, remarked, “It’s about recognizing the broader role of libraries while also demonstrating potential career paths in the media industry.”
Keeley Lilley, one of the producers for the show, noted the extensive paperwork involved. “We have to create schedules and ensure everyone stays on track. It can be chaotic, but it’s also enjoyable. Witnessing everything come together in the end fills me with pride,” she shared.
Francesca Rose, a tutor at SNC, emphasized, “This event provides an outstanding opportunity for students to apply the skills they have acquired in a real-world setting.”
Students have the opportunity to concentrate on their preferred areas of interest while collaborating with external bands and guests. The sense of excitement and pride they experience following the event is remarkable.
The initiative to organize music events at the library was proposed by theatre specialist Kirsty Tallent, who served as the storyteller in residence for Suffolk Libraries last year. Currently, the events are overseen by Sally Garwood, a former student of Suffolk New College. Ms. Garwood remarked, “I participated in producing the live TV event module during my time in this very course at Suffolk New College from 2011 to 2013, so I was thrilled when the course tutor reached out to me in my capacity at the library to find a venue.”
