The Mexican government has issued a diplomatic note to the United States, aiming to prevent the transfer of Mexican nationals to the Guantanamo Bay naval base in Cuba, as stated by President Claudia Sheinbaum on Tuesday.
This communication was prompted by the announcement from Donald Trump’s administration last month regarding plans to relocate migrants to the U.S. naval facility located on the Caribbean island.
Additionally, Mexico has requested that all its citizens being deported from the United States be returned directly to Mexico rather than being sent to other countries, Sheinbaum mentioned during her daily press briefing.
“No Mexican should be sent anywhere other than Mexico,” Sheinbaum asserted.
Her remarks follow the recent deportation by the Trump administration of over 200 alleged members of the Venezuelan Tren de Aragua gang to El Salvador over the weekend, despite a court ruling that prohibited such actions.
The American Civil Liberties Union, which has opposed the deportations to El Salvador, is also working to prevent the transfer of migrants to Guantanamo Bay, citing concerns over the harsh conditions and instances of suicide attempts among those detained there.
