Nigeria’s NITDA Emphasizes Digital Skills as Key to Economic Growth

ABUJA, Nigeria – The Director General of Nigeria’s National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA), Kashifu Inuwa, has stressed the critical importance of equipping Nigerian citizens with strong digital skills to unlock the potential of technology for economic advancement. He characterized technology as a neutral but powerful tool capable of accelerating Nigeria’s socio-economic development.

Speaking at a virtual panel session focused on “Culture and Innovation: The Changing Landscape and Technoculture,” Inuwa highlighted the need to leverage technological advancements in a way that balances the preservation of Nigeria’s cultural heritage with the pursuit of sustainable economic growth.

Represented by Barrister Emmanuel Edet, Acting Director, Regulation and Compliance, Inuwa emphasized that the impact of technology depends on how it is applied. He advocated for well-defined policies and strong collaborations to ensure that technological innovations are integrated with Nigeria’s cultural values and development goals.

Acknowledging the increasing influence of digital innovation, Inuwa pointed to user-friendly creative tools like Figma, Canva, and CorelDRAW, which now incorporate Artificial Intelligence (AI). He stressed the need to empower Nigerians with the digital skills to effectively utilize these tools, opening up new avenues for economic progress and participation in the digital economy.

Inuwa concluded by reiterating that “Technology is a tool—it all depends on how we use it,” emphasizing NITDA’s commitment to creating an environment that allows technology to contribute to Nigeria’s economic and creative development while safeguarding the nation’s cultural identity.
