One Direction stars Louis Tomlinson and Zayn Malik are reuniting in an upcoming new project.
Filming has already begun on the multi-million-pound Netflix road trip documentary, which will follow the singers as they travel across the US.
The documentary is expected to offer an emotional glimpse into the inner lives of the former bandmates, as they discuss romance, art, friendship, and even the tragic death of Liam Payne.
The project is expected to drop in 2026, exactly a decade after the band split up.
Other remaining members, Harry Styles and Niall Horan, are not currently believed to be involved in the project.

A source told The Sun: ‘This will be an absolutely huge show for Netflix and is guaranteed to whip 1D’s global army of fans into a frenzy.
‘Although the idea of British boyband members doing a show about travelling across America sounds random, most of them now have strong links Stateside.
‘And it’s likely to be a chance for some serious soul-searching and deep discussions about the incredible journey the group have already been on since they were formed on The X Factor 15 years ago.’
The news comes a year after One Directioner Liam Payne died aged 31 on October 16, 2024, after he fell from a hotel balcony in Buenos Aires, Argentina, leaving friends, family, and fans all over the world devastated.
Zayn, Louis, Niall, and Harry were all in attendance for the devastating goodbye at St. Mary’s Church in Amersham, as Payne’s loved ones held a private service.
The documentary is expected to explore Louis and Zayn’s experience grieving their former bandmate, as well as their personal lives.
In recent years, Zayn has gradually stepped back into the spotlight after maintaining a low profile. He released his fourth solo album, Room Under the Stairs, in 2024, showcasing a more stripped-back, introspective sound.
That same year, he performed his first solo concert since leaving One Direction and launched the Stairway to the Sky Tour. Though the U.S. dates were postponed after Liam Payne’s death, Zayn has since announced a seven-night Las Vegas residency set for early 2026.
Outside of music, Zayn has focused on co-parenting his daughter Khai with ex-partner Gigi Hadid, maintaining her privacy while occasionally sharing glimpses of fatherhood.
For Louis’ part, he has steadily built on his post–One Direction career in recent years. In 2023 and 2024 he toured extensively with his Faith in the Future world tour and in April 2024, he surprised fans by releasing Live, his first live album, comprised of performances recorded during his tours.
More recently, he’s entered a new chapter: in September 2025 he dropped Lemonade, the lead single for his third studio album, How Did I Get Here?, which is slated for release on 23 January 2026.
Accompanying that, he’s announced the How Did We Get Here? world tour, set to run from March to July 2026. He’s also been more open about personal challenges, including speaking publicly about online rumors affecting his family and relationships, as well as his relationship with girlfriend Zara McDermott.
He also recently sent One Direction fans into overdrive after sharing a video on social media that appeared to be teasing something big.
The star posted two videos on TikTok recently mysteriously captioned with, ‘Costa Rica. 9th May 2025,’ and, ‘Costa Rica. 20th May 2025.’
In them, he can be seen seemingly recording music. But on closer inspection this may not be a solo project, as fans are convinced in the audio for one of the videos – consisting of two harmonised notes – they could hear Harry Styles and Zayn Malik’s voices.
It’s unknown if the boyband will be releasing any new music anytime soon – or ever again – but 1D fans certainly have something to look forward to as they await the upcoming documentary.
