A man sustained severe injuries after being stabbed at the Holocaust memorial in Berlin, according to police reports released on Friday evening, just two days prior to a significant national election.
Authorities indicated that they had not yet identified the male assailant, who remains at large, and the motive for the attack is still under investigation.
Footage from the scene depicted emergency response vehicles and heavily armed police positioned along one side of the memorial, which consists of a large expanse of grey concrete pillars where the incident occurred. The memorial is situated directly across the street from the U.S. Embassy.
A male suspect, whose identity remains unknown, assaulted an individual in this location, resulting in severe injuries that necessitated emergency transport to the hospital by the fire brigade, according to police spokesperson Florian Nath.
The incident took place at approximately 6 p.m. (1700 GMT). Fortunately, the victim’s life is not in jeopardy, and preparations for surgery are underway, Nath noted.
He further stated that law enforcement does not consider there to be any immediate threat to public safety.

The memorial, regarded as one of the most revered locations in the German capital, honors the six million Jews who were killed by Adolf Hitler’s Nazi regime during World War II, a profoundly tragic chapter in human history that remains a significant aspect of Germany’s efforts toward historical reconciliation.
The vicinity around the memorial was cordoned off.
The national election campaign is currently overshadowed by a series of prominent incidents, as polls indicate that a far-right party may secure second place for the first time in ninety years. Among these incidents was a stabbing attributed to an Afghan immigrant, igniting a contentious discussion on immigration policies.
On Friday, an 18-year-old of Chechen descent was taken into custody on suspicion of plotting an attack on the Israeli Embassy in Berlin, as reported by Bild newspaper.
