On Thursday, Britain announced a ban on the export of video game controllers to Russia, which can be utilized to operate drones, as part of its latest trade sanctions following Moscow’s invasion of Ukraine. Sanctions minister Stephen Doughty stated, ‘We are completely prohibiting the export of video game controllers to Russia, ensuring they cannot be repurposed for drone operations on the battlefield, thus preventing gaming consoles from being used to cause harm in Ukraine.’ This announcement follows reports from Ukraine’s air force indicating that Russia had launched 215 drones and missiles in a recent overnight assault.

Earlier this year, the European Union implemented a similar ban on video games and joysticks. Additionally, Britain is also restricting the export of software utilized in the defense and energy sectors, including applications for weapon production and exploration of new oil and gas resources.
