UN Rights Chief Express Deep Worry about ‘fundamental Shift in Direction’ in US Under Trump

The United Nations’ rights chief expressed significant alarm on Monday regarding a “fundamental shift in direction” occurring in the United States under President Donald Trump, cautioning that divisive language is being employed to mislead and polarize the populace.

“We have benefited from bipartisan support from the U.S. on human rights for many years… I am now profoundly concerned about the fundamental shift in direction that is unfolding both domestically and internationally,” stated Volker Turk, the U.N. High Commissioner for Human Rights, during a meeting of the U.N. Human Rights Council in Geneva, refraining from directly naming Trump.

He further highlighted worries about a regression in gender equality and a rise in the use of disinformation, intimidation, and threats directed at journalists and public officials.
