A beloved WWE legend had to be taken to hospital this week after being bitten by a bat.

Veteran wrestling referee Charles Robinson, who has been with the company since 2001, revealed on Wednesday that he was rushed to the emergency room after he was attacked by the wild animal.

The 61-year-old star shared a photo from his hospital bed, alongside a video of himself wincing in pain as he got one of his injections.

Charles captioned the post: ‘Great way to start the morning. 2:00am and got bit by a bat. That’s right a bat! 4 hours later in the ER and six shots. #animalattacks #hospital’

The longtime wrestling official hasn’t given any more details about the incident yet, but he appears to be in good spirits.

‘Sending my best wishes as always, get well soon legend,’ a fan, @jamieh61, replied in the comments.

Another follower, @barelysarcasm, quipped: ‘Does this mean you are now BAT MAN?! Very cool.’

He is a regular fixture as a senior referee on WWE’s SmackDown brand, having first entered the business in 1995 before joining World Championship Wrestling (WCW) two years later.

As well as weekly appearances on WWE SmackDown, Charles also referees matches on the company’s monthly premium live events.

Last month, he was the official for fellow WCW legend Goldberg’s retirement match against then-World Heavyweight Champion GUNTHER at Saturday Night’s Main Event.

During the bout, he got taken out with the Hall of Famer’s brutal signature Spear move, and joked about the incident after the show.

He wrote on Instagram: ‘Still friends with @goldberg95 after having the honor of officiating the match against @gunther_wwe for @wwe #SaturdayNightMainEvent in #Atlanta! Ribs are still sore but so what…I got SPEARED! #wrestling #wwe #lastmatch #goldberg’

He’s been getting very physical lately, and back in June he was taken out by John Cena during his match with CM Punk at Night of Champions in Saudi Arabia.

After the brutal bumps, an online troll shared a mocked up graphic of Charles’ face with the captioned: ‘In Memory of Ref Lil’ Naitch.’

The veteran took the make memorial in good humour, and clarified he was actually ‘alive and well’.

He wrote: ‘I am alive and well. Some people are just stinky nasty old butt holes that spread lies. Do not believe anything you read on the Internet. Have a great week. #NOTDEAD.’
