At least 30 individuals lost their lives and many others sustained injuries in Guatemala City on Monday morning when a bus plunged off a bridge while navigating a heavily trafficked highway, according to a spokesperson from the city’s fire department.

The bus was operating on a busy route in and out of the city when it fell from the Puente Belice, a bridge that spans a road and creek.
Images released by the fire department on social media depicted the bus partially submerged in water, surrounded by the bodies of victims.
On social media, Guatemala City Mayor Ricardo Quinonez announced that emergency services had been dispatched, while traffic police were working to establish alternative routes in the impacted area.
