He may be TV royalty, but Alan Carr is now entering the nobility in real life after purchasing a £3,000,000 castle on the Scottish border.
The purchase of the stately home, known as Ayton Castle, also comes with the baron title, which is the lowest rank in the peerage system (followed by Viscount, Earl, Marquis and, the cream of the crop, Duke).
Entering the upper-class fray, the comedian, 49, who originally hails from Dorset, will get his own matching tartan with the swish new title that dates back to 1324 and comes at an extra cost.
After spending a successful stint in Ardoss Castle, the iconic location of the Celebrity Traitors, the treacherous victor was inspired to make his own£3.25m investment, which will reportedly come with his own brand new TV show.
The website for the castle describes it as ‘an important Scottish baronial mansion’ and an ‘impressive local landmark’.
He discussed his swanky new property, which boasts 17 bedrooms and a turret, on the Staying Relevant podcast, and shot down any rumours that he had lost out.
‘I have bought it. Someone said someone else has bought it but, no, I have. I haven’t been this excited about a project for ages.
‘I’ve got the survey now and I’m waiting for the keys to come. I’ll be a baron and I’ll be getting my own tartan – I might get a nice man up there,’ he quipped.
Nestled on the Berwickshire coastline with 160 acres of land and a little railway, the 19th-century home will soon be transformed.
He has reportedly signed a deal with Disney Plus to bring his journey to the small screen with the currently titled Castle Man (a spin on his famed chat show Chatty Man).
There have been rumblings of discontent over the potential renovation project in the local area, with The Sun reporting that hundreds from the local community plan to attend a meeting to discuss the development.
Talking about his motivation to buy the castle on the podcast, joked: ‘Listen, I could get myself a lamborghini but I’m in my turret era. I want a castle and I’m 50, I’m not gonna be around forever and I think, 50, I just wanna do what I wanna do.’
‘I just want a castle, I don’t know why. I’m not a pushy person mincing down Bond Street getting all the designer stuff,’ he added.
The Last One Laughing star also pushed back against reports that he planned to turn it into a luxury hotel and spa.
The TV personality shared: ‘When you see what I want to do with it, I think you’re gonna love it. Community-based, I’ve got all this land, a bit of rewilding, looking after animals.
‘It is my home and I’m selling up and moving up there.’
So there we have it, tip your hat in respect for Baron Alan Carr, we’re waiting with bated breath to see his next move.
