Aldi has unveiled some new products of late and one that’s bound to grab people’s attention is a new Cake Sandwich.
Following hot on the heels of the viral M&S Strawberries and Creme Sando and the Birthday Cake Sandwich from Tesco, this new sweet treat has done what neither of the others did – swapped bread for actual slices of cake.
Priced at £1.99 for a pack containing two slices, the new item hits the bakery aisle in Aldi stores nationwide today (October 13) and features layers of vanilla sponge, a blush pink vanilla frosting and rainbow sprinkles.
But there is a bit of a catch, it’s only going to be available for a limited time, so you’ll have to be quick if you want to try it.
Aldi has hailed it as the first-ever supermarket ‘real cake sarnie’ and say it comes after rival supermarket versions were ‘met with clear shopper preference for traditional cake’.
They claim demand has been ‘so strong’ for an Aldi version that featured cake instead of brioche, that they simply had to give the people what they want, because ‘bread belongs under beans, not buttercream’.
Julie Ashfield, chief commercial officer at Aldi UK, commented: ‘The nation made it clear: cake beats crusts every time. We’ve taken the hint and delivered exactly what shoppers have asked for.
‘True to form, our Cake Sandwich is simple yet delicious — creating the perfect pick-me-up treat that truly delivers.’
The Cake Sandwich might only just have hit supermarkets, but several foodies had an early try of the new product and some have even boldly claimed it’s ‘better than M&S’.
In a video review on Instagram, @darcieratcliff shared: ‘I’m pretty sure this is shade to M&S because it’s actually cake.’
Darcie proceeded to take a bite, and said: ‘I don’t know if it’s the fact that I’m breastfeeding but sugar has never tasted so good. The cake is lovely.
‘It’s not homemade cake good, but it is a lovely sweet treat and to be honest with you it is way better than the one from M&S, but that’s just because I found that one weird.’
She added: ‘I was convinced I wasn’t going to like it because looks-wise it’s nothing special, but it is a great sweet treat. It’s like typical school party cake, but in the best way possible, it reminds me of my childhood.’
And other reviews have been positive so far, with @newfoodsuk posting: ‘This was a good bit of cake and had plenty of frosting in the middle too.’
While @itsaimie thought: ‘This was nice but a little dry if you didn’t get the icing.’
In the comments many Aldi shoppers shared their excitement for the cake sandwich, saying ‘finally no brioche bread sandwiches’, ‘yum’ and ‘hope they bring a chocolate one out.’
This isn’t the only new item Aldi has launched recently, as the budget retailer also sent shoppers wild last week with the return of its Wooden Toy Event, which descended into ‘carnage’.
And in terms of food, Aldi’s wagyu beef steak range has been rolled out into all stores, there’s a new pumpkin spice version of the iconic Ballycastle country cream, plus plenty of other themed Halloween and Christmas goodies available too.
Elsewhere in food news, Ferrero unveiled its first-ever Nutella advent calendar (but it doesn’t come cheap), KFC has brought back the ‘holy grail’ burger of fast food and Walkers has made some changes to its crisp range.
