American in the UK reveals the most 'overhyped' things about the country
The UK might be dark, cold and rainy at times but there’s plenty to love about this nation too. From our fondness for certain hot beverages through to our obsession with certain TV shows which could only ever have been made on these shores. But not everybody shares our enthusiasm for our favourite things and one American living over here has gone so far as to proclaim some of our national institutions as ‘overhyped’. How very dare he… (Picture: Getty Images)

The TikTokker, who goes by the name @kjordyyy, had some pretty strong opinions about three things in particular, making his views very clear online and spawning the sort of the reaction you might expect. But what are they? (Picture: TikTok)

1. Tea

First up – in a move that may shock many Brits – the social media commentator had the humble British cuppa in its sights, making his feelings about the hot drink all too clear. ‘Tea for breakfast, tea for lunch, afternoon tea. I just personally don’t believe it lives up to its hype,’ he says in the video (Picture: Getty Images/iStockphoto)

1. Tea

‘There are so many goats out there. There are hot liquids besides tea… for example, coffee. Coffee beats tea because coffee actually gives you an effect. Tea does nothing…it has no strong taste to me.’ He did make one concession by saying: ‘I will give tea over matcha though.’ But it didn’t stop there… (Picture: Getty Images)

2. A Sunday roast

You might not tuck into yorkshires and gravy on a weekly basis, but there’s no denying the Sunday roast’s place in British culture. The self-titled ‘yank among Brits’ remains underwhelmed after finally trying the meal for himself (Picture: Getty Images)

2. A Sunday roast

‘I had my first Sunday roast ever last weekend, and it just didn’t live up to the hype,’ he told his followers. ‘You think a Sunday roast is like God’s gift to man…it genuinely tastes like an unseasoned Thanksgiving. I honestly think the fact that it brings families together, it’s almost like nostalgic that you do this every single Sunday with your mom or your dad or friends’ (Picture: Getty Images)

3. The Inbetweeners

Finally, it might be one of the most beloved comedy series of all time among British viewers but Kjordy remains unmoved by The Inbetweeners, despite being told he absolutely had to watch it. ‘Every single time I talk about British humour, Brits are always like “mate, you’ve gotta watch The Inbetweeners”. And after seeing an episode…I don’t think I laughed once. Overhyped’ (Picture: Channel 4)

3. The Inbetweeners

Citing ‘different humours’ as the reason he wasn’t keen, the TikTokker went on: ‘I’m not hating on British TV. There are multiple shows that are way better than Inbetweeners. For example Derry Girls. Derry Girls is funny, alright.’ Naturally, the video sparked a whole host of debate in the comments (Picture: Channel 4)

@BexSweet2023 said: ‘Just to make you aware, tea fixes everything. Tough day at work? Have a nice cuppa. Got a cold? Have a nice cuppa. Split up with your significant other? Have a nice cuppa. Broke your arm? HAVE A NICE CUPPA.’ Another, Poppy26839, added: ‘You need to go for an elite level Sunday roast my friend. Or for a home cooked one, by someone who knows what they are doing’ (Picture: @kjordyyy/TikTok)

Others, however, agreed with his views, with LHT saying: ‘I loathe Sunday roasts’ and Sian adding: ‘I’m British and I hate tea’. As for The Intbetweeners, Ryan added: ‘I feel you had to go to a UK state school in that era to really understand the humour’ (Picture: @kjordyyy/TikTok)
