ASEAN: Talk Tariffs with US, No Retaliation

Southeast Asian nations are advocating for discussions with the United States regarding trade tariffs and have decided against implementing retaliatory actions, as stated by the economic ministers of the ASEAN bloc on Thursday.

Prior to the announcement of a 90-day delay by U.S. President Donald Trump on the enforcement of tariffs, six out of nine Southeast Asian countries affected by the U.S. administration faced unexpectedly high tariffs ranging from 32% to 49%.

In contrast, the tariffs imposed on the European Union were set at 20%, while Japan faced 24% and India 27%.

After their meeting on Thursday, the ministers reiterated their commitment to a predictable, equitable, and rules-based multilateral trading system.

The 10-member ASEAN bloc represents the fifth-largest economy globally, with its members significantly dependent on exports for economic growth.
