Austrian bobsleigh athlete Jakob Mandlbauer was taken away on a stretcher after a concerning crash at the Winter Olympics.
The Austrian team – compromised off Mandlbauer, Daniel Bertschler, Sebastian Mitterer and Daiyehan Nichols-Bardi – tipped over over on its side on Curve 7.
Despite tipping over, the sled continue to slide for an extended period and almost reached the finish line.
After coming to a half, medical personnel were seen attending to the athletes, with the competition delayed for an extended period.
Bertschler, Mitterer and Nichols-Bardi were all seen standing and leaving the scene after medical checks, but Mandlbauer had to be taken away on a stretcher.
And Austrian officials confirmed that Mandlbauer would be taken to the hospital as a precautionary measure, but had sustained no injury.
‘Jakob is on his way to hospital,’ Christoph Iglhauser, Austrian team press member, told The Athletic.
‘He’s not so bad. It’s just a check. Everyone else is fine. No injury, only a check. He’ll be fine.’
The team – one of two representing Austria at these Games – already crashed earlier in the event during unofficial training before the start of competition.
Austria were 21st after their first run, but were disqualified following the crash after failing to cross the finish line with their sled.
Another crash occured only an hour later when the French team lost control during their second run.
But all four athletes were quick to emerge, seemingly unharmed, before being walked back to the team area.
And shortly afterwards, the Trinidad and Tobago team also tipped over in the final run of heat two, but all four athletes emerged unscathed.
