A report has claimed that Naga Munchetty made a ‘targeted’ comment in reference to her BBC Breakfast co-star Sally Nugent’s new hairstyle.
The 54-year-old debuted a voluminous blowout this month on the BBC’s flagship morning news programme, while hosting alongside Jon Kay, in a departure from her usually straight hair.
It has now been reported that Nugent’s new ‘do ‘ruffled feathers’ behind the scenes.
Munchetty, 50, is said to have been heard in the studio saying: ‘We’re meant to be serious journalists, not trying to look like we’re presenting This Morning.’
An insider told The Sun of the comment: ‘Sally tries to keep out of the rivalries but this latest comment feels particularly targeted. What’s wrong with having a few highlights and trying out new styles?
‘Sally is loving the new look – it doesn’t detract in any way from her work or how good a journalist she is.’
It comes amid a reported ongoing investigation behind the scenes at the programme, into Naga Munchetty over allegations of bullying.
A BBC spokesperson said when the investigation was first reported: ‘We do not comment on individual HR matters.’
An HR adviser from consultancy firm PwC was supporting the Beeb as it reviews the culture of the BBC One morning show.
Last year, it was confirmed that the editor of BBC Breakfast, Richard Frediani, would be taking a period of extended leave from the programme. He had headed up the daily show from Salford since 2019, having formerly worked at ITV News.
A month later, it was reported by Deadline that Frediani had returned to the show.
It had been reported last summer that Munchetty was in talks to leave BBC Breakfast and go to the radio station LBC.
The report of Munchetty’s possible departure came after the top BBC salaries were once again revealed in the broadcaster’s annual report, stating the presenter takes home between £355,000 and £359,000.
Metro contacted Naga Munchetty and Sally Nugent’s representatives at the BBC for comment.
