Over two years after BBC Ghosts came to an end with a poignant Christmas special, the ghoulish gang may be getting back together.

The five-season ensemble comedy starring Mathew Baynton, Jim Howick and Lolly Adefope follows unassuming couple Alison (Charlotte Ritchie) and Mike (Kiell Smith-Bynoe) who inherit a stately home… and all the ghosts that come with it.

Created by the Horrible Histories alumni, the heartwarming show amassed a huge fanbase with over four million tuning in for the 2023 festive finale, as well as inspiring the popular US and Australian remakes.

Of course, since it came to an end, there has always been a secret hope (with encouragement from the cast themselves) that it may return again in some shape or form, perhaps even as a movie.

Now, fans are convinced that’s exactly what’s happening after several members of the cast, including Simon Farnaby, Martha Howe-Douglas, Mat, Jim and Larry Rickard, all uploaded the same clip to social media.

The short video simply shows the front door of Button House opening up (almost as though by a spirit) while birds tweet away in the background.

It may not be much to go on, but it’s the strongest sign yet that we’re going to get an onscreen reunion and a fresh Ghosts story before long.

Fans simply cannot contain their excitement at this sudden turn of events.

‘I’m not screaming in my house with excitement, you are!…okay, it’s me! AAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHH’ redviewfilms commented.

‘Remember the speculation that there would be a Ghosts movie???’ matxbaynton reminded everyone.

‘Pls say sike right now, I’m at work & ready to crash out over this,’ badwolfattire echoed.

The fifth and final season emotionally destroyed fans who were not ready to let go of this cohort of kooky characters.

What does Metro think of a possible BBC Ghosts reboot?

Senior TV reporter and Ghosts superfan Asyia Iftikhar gives her two pence…

Look, I know some TV shows are better put to rest and never heard from again to protect the epic legacy they’ve created. Normally, I’m a strong believer in leaving the past in the past and not ruining it with a pointless revival.

That is not the case with BBC Ghosts, a show I have rewatched more times than I’d like to admit.

Much like the rowdy and bonkers ghosts, I’m all behind the series refusing to stay dead.

The hilarious sitcom has endless potential for new shenanigans for the ghostly inhabitants to get up to. It’s the kind of show that could go on in perpetuity without me getting bored.

I know I’m not the only one who finds immense comfort in the goings-on of Button House and if I can add another story to that mix, I won’t complain.

Give me more terrible Thomas poetry! I want to hear Robin the Caveman’s disarming moments of wisdom! Show me those sweet moments when The Captain lets his guard down!

So, whether it is coming back for another season, a play, a movie or another rogue reunion – I’m ready and waiting.

It was only weeks later that the first rumours of a movie began, with reports that the main cast were ready to reprise their roles and that bosses were even eyeing ‘A-list talent to pad out the cast’.

‘A film has been written, and it’s been given the green light. Everyone involved is really excited that Ghosts will be on the big screen,’ Daily Star’s Hot TV column claimed at the time.

Meanwhile, several of the actors have shared that they would happily return to the Ghosts set for some form of a reboot.

Lolly, who plays the endearingly naive Regency era icon Kitty, told Metro that she would ‘definitely’ return if asked.

And while discussing the potential return of the show last year, Kiell, whose character sadly can’t see the deceased apparitions, even pitched a story idea to Metro.

‘American Ghosts did an episode where the husband gets possessed by the other ghosts and I’d love to do that. That’d be fun. I’d love that if you [the BBC] are listening,’ he joked.

And You star Charlotte also gave her eager seal of approval to a reprisal, coyly adding to Metro: ‘I’m sure [the writers] have a million ideas that are left over that never got used.

So I would be fascinated to find out what they thought if that were to ever happen. I don’t know if it will, but we can always live in hope,’ she pondered.’

Whatever the Ghosts cast are teasing, we’re seated and ready to watch it!

Ghosts is available to stream on BBC iPlayer now.
