In 2024, a distraught mum relived the moment she picked up the body of her eight-month-old ‘rainbow baby’ from the side of the motorway after he was thrown from their car in a horror crash.

Darryl Anderson, 40, was jailed for 17 years for killing little Zackary Blades and the infant’s aunt, Karlene Warner, 30, on the A1 between Chester-le-Street and Durham.

Moments before the impact, Anderson – who was three times the drink drive limit – took a photo of his Audi Q5’s speedometer showing 141mph.

The collision crumpled the back of Shalorna Warner’s Peugeot 308, crushing her son’s car seat and catapulting him over to the other side of the dual carriageway.

Ms Warner recalled in vivid detail her car being spun around, seeing her sister badly injured, and frantically looking for Zack.

She told the court how she screamed his name while sifting through pieces of her wrecked car before a passing lorry driver spotted him lying in the opposite lane.

Ms Warner said: ‘I knew instantly. I had to pick my dead baby up from the side of the road. I hugged him so tight, a hug I will never forget.

‘No words will surmount the irreparable hole that has been left in my heart and in my life.

‘Zackary was my rainbow baby – he was the light at the end of a tunnel of a very dark time for me and brought joy, happiness and laughter into my life.

‘And for my sister Karlene, I just have no words. I am so sorry this happened to you. It’s hard to process something that doesn’t seem real – it just feels like I am living a nightmare.’
