After Hollyoaks celebrated a dazzling 30th anniversary, the residents of Chester’s most dramatic village are set to explode into our living rooms for many years to come.

Since becoming the first soap opera to go digital in 2023, Hollyoaks’ trail-blazing strategy has seen ratings shoot to its strongest performance in years.

This is in no small part thanks to the highly anticipated return to Brookside broadcast on Wednesday October 22, the UK’s first ever soap crossover episode.

This epic act of fan service was reflected in the viewing figures, making it Hollyoaks’ best-performing episode for consolidated individuals viewing (645k) since October 2021, and its highest consolidated share (5.8%) since February 2020.

The episode also delivered a record-breaking digital performance, becoming the best ever Hollyoaks episode on streaming (0–7 Day O&O), reaching 522k views, surpassing all previous non-Christmas episodes.

Hollyoaks’ viewers had their itch for nostalgia well and truly scratched by the resurrection of the beloved Scouse Soap, delighting them with familiar faces including included Bobby Grant (Ricky Tomlinson), Billy Corkhill (John McArdle), Timothy “Tinhead” O’Leary (Philip Olivier), Nikki Shadwick (Suzanne Collins) and Thomas “Sinbad” Sweeney (Michael Starke).

The return to Brookside Close centred around classic character Mick Johnson (Louis Emerick), better known in Dee Valley as Donny Clarke. Weaving both soap characters into one, Hollyoaks has created a dual identity storyline for the troubled copper which has kept audiences glued to their screens.

The episode even paid tribute to Brookside with its iconic theme tune, making it a heartfelt homage to both shows.

Brookside wasn’t the only blast from the past. Hollyoaks Laters made an explosive return on the same night, which saw fan favourite Dodger Savage assaulted by gang members in shocking scenes, achieving an impressive 409k views.

Add a plane crash that, a sprinkling of Game of Thrones level character deaths and a nostalgia-fest of returning legacy characters from the teen soap’s halcyon days, and you’ve got a recipe for success.

It’s a recipe that’s clearly keeping fans hungry for their dose of Dee Valley Drama. Louise Donald, Channel 4 Drama Commissioning Executive shares the success of Hollyoaks 30th Anniversary.

‘We were thrilled by the reaction to the Hollyoaks birthday episodes which saw a devasting plane crash, character deaths and even made soap history with the Hollyoaks/Brookside crossover special. Hollyoaks has been at the heart of C4’s drama for thirty years and we have no doubt it will continue to deliver explosive, bold and fearless storylines in the years to come.’

The transition to digital has not been without its challenges. Releasing episodes early across digital platforms has resulted in a drop to three episodes a week, which sadly meant letting go a number of cast and crew to facilitate the new transmission pattern.

However, since the move the Chester based soap has gone from strength to strength under the leadership of Executive Producer Hannah Cheers, who helmed the ground breaking see-it-here first issue stories that Hollyoaks is famous for; such as Frankie’s harrowing sibling abuse storyline, Ro’s child trans journey, and Lucas’ conversion therapy hell.

But Hollyoaks wouldn’t be Hollyoaks without a healthy dollop of jaw-dropping ‘oh-no-they-didn’t’ soapy goodness.

Viewers squealed with delight to see the return of super-baddy Clare Devine from the dead, and spat out their dinners in shock when Jeremy Sheffield graced our screens once more to play Jez Blake, the twin brother of another infamous dear departed Oaks Baddy, Patrick Blake.

This delicate balance between reality and bonkers has always made Hollyoaks unique, and its success is easy to see.

The transition to a digital-first model and the streamlined schedule has sharpened creative impact and strengthened viewer engagement, particularly among 16–34s, who remain at the heart of the show’s audience.

As Hollyoaks enters its fourth decade, the soap’s exceptional anniversary-week performance demonstrates the continued power of innovative storytelling and the enduring loyalty of its audience, cementing Hollyoaks as a cornerstone of Channel 4’s digital portfolio and a trailblazer in British soap drama. Here’s to another thirty years!
