Child dies dies after a ‘medical emergency’ in Surrey college

A Year 8 student died at Collingwood College after an ‘incident’ on Monday afternoon.

Parents at the school in Camberley, Sussex, were sent a letter after ambulance services were called to the school around 2.10pm on Monday.

The co-educational secondary school has around 1,700 students, and said in a statement that it was ‘deeply affected by this tragic loss’.

A spokesperson for Surrey Coroner’s Court said the death had been referred to the coroner.

Year 8 students are typically 12 or 13 years old, but the age and identity of the pupil has not been shared.

South East Coast Ambulance Service said they treated the student at the scene before taking them to Frimley Park Hospital in a ‘life-threatening’ condition.

‘Ambulance crews attended and were joined at the scene by the Air Ambulance Charity Kent Surrey Sussex,’ it added.

In December, a student died after suffering a medical emergency at a school in South Tyneside.

Emergency services had been called to St Wilfrid’s RC College in South Shields after the student became unwell.

In a statement, headteacher Catherine Lennox said: ‘As you may already be aware, we have had a medical episode in school this morning.

‘Sadly, the student involved has passed away. Our entire school community is deeply saddened, and we will continue to come together to support one another at this incredibly difficult time.

‘Our school community joins us in sending thoughts and prayers to the family and those affected.’
