Corriedale is going to be epic, isn’t it? Even the prospect of the two ITV soap titans crossing paths is the stuff soap fans dreams are made of and, next week, it becomes a reality, as Coronation Street and Emmerdale (literally) collide in a fiery car pile up that will change the lives of everybody involved.
The cast list is stacked with a delicious mix of goodies, baddies, icons and legends, and with the soap event of the century mere days away, we’ve all been wondering the same thing, haven’t we?
Will there be further crossovers within both shows?
Our very own Maisie Spackman, Metro soaps reporter and TikTok Queen, took to the mic at the panel held after the Corriedale premiere and asked just that of Iain MacLeod, Executive Producer for Continuing Drama at ITV, the man responsible for the crossover episode…
…and unfortunately, our hopes were more than just a little bit dashed. Sad face emoji.
‘There are two stories that emerge from what you’ve just seen that do pursue parallel lines, one in one show and one in the other show,’ he began, before delivering the killer blow.
‘So there’s some degree to which those stories are in conversation with each other, but not literally, there’s no crossovers or anything like that.
‘But, you know, in the MCU, all those characters exist in the same fictional universe, and now the same is true of Emmerdale and Corrie, but I don’t think there’s going to be much inter-referentiality beyond what we’ve just seen.’
‘People love Corrie and people love Emmerdale and they are distinct entities and they have their own tone and voice and sense of humour and their own way of telling stories but they wouldn’t together blend long term, brilliant to bring them together for this but there are no plans to do anything similar in the future.’
While it sounds like we won’t be seeing Tracy Barlow (Kate Ford) clash with Kim Tate (Claire King) in a battle of the bitches or Steve McDonald (Simon Gregson) finding his fifth bride in Yorkshire, the cast involved in the crossover spoke at length over their joy of getting to work alongside legendary actors from the other soap.
Emma Atkins who plays our problematic Queen, Charity Dingle, said: ‘I think it’s that thing when you grow up watching something and you have so much respect for the other side of the M62, so to speak, and you’re just like, now I’m working with these incredible people.

‘I had a scene, particularly with Julia (Goulding) and Jack (P Shepherd), and watching them do their stuff…you kind of have to embrace every moment that you’re in, whoever you’re working with, because it’s just camaraderie thing, isn’t it? And the community, that’s my thing. I feel like I’m part of magic, you know? Something special.’
Jack backed Emma up, and spoke on a particular scene they shared with legends of their respective shows.
‘Me and Emma, we were lucky enough to be with Eric Pollard (Chris Chittell) and Ken Barlow (William Roache) as well, with both of them. We were in that scene just, well, I was only in the scene like right at the end or at the beginning, but you get to go over it.’

Danny Miller (Aaron Dingle) expanded on what it was like working with the Corrie cast, including one shocking revelation that he hadn’t expected…
‘They get free toast!’ he exclaimed. ‘There was an e-mail sent to Granada, and then I just got a response saying ‘out of office’, which was funny.’
On a more serious note, he said: ‘Bringing them over to Yorkshire, where the majority of the Corridale was filmed, it was nice because we were all on location, so we didn’t feel like they were coming to our turf, if you like. It just felt like we were all on location together, and it was great.
‘Everybody got on really well, and you know, we went to their studios, and we were very welcome, and they came to our studios.’
Maybe upon hearing how much the casts enjoyed the crossover, Iain could be swayed into commissioning a few more? Fingers crossed, folks… After all, what is it they always say in soapland? Never say never…
