The Devil Wears Prada 2 trailer has finally dropped, and fans are ‘already sat’ – despite some feeling it looks a little washed out compared to the original.
Last year, Anne Hathaway took to social media to tease the return of her beloved character Andy Sachs, and it’s almost time for her to slip back into those Chanel boots.
Two decades after we first set foot at Runway Magazine, the main cast is back in action, including Meryl Streep as Editor in Chief, Miranda Priestly.
Emily Blunt and Stanley Tucci are also featured prominently in the new trailer, reprising their roles as Emily and Nigel, respectively.
‘Runway’, says Stanley in the voiceover, ‘It’s not just a magazine. It’s a global icon, a winding road that brings us back together again.’
The trailer shows Miranda, alone on a Met Gala-esque carpet, dressed in a dramatic asymmetric red gown before cutting to Andy arriving at the office.
Madonna’s Vogue blasts in the background as we’re told Andy has returned to Runway to be the new Features Editor.
Emily quips that her former co-worker is ‘more confident’ but has ‘kept those eyebrows’ in a familiar back-and-forth, reminiscent of the original movie.
However, it’s Meryl’s return that has captured fans’ attention, with some seemingly confused by one particular creative choice.
While the dynamic duo may have been cemented in our minds for 20 years, Miranda appears to have completely forgotten ‘the Emilys’.
‘Sorry, who is this?’ Miranda asks Nigel after Andy’s grand entrance in a twist that has rubbed some fans the wrong way.
One fan on Reddit said: ‘I don’t really like the “amnesia Miranda” they’ve got going on here. She’s not stupid and forgetful enough to have that reaction.’
Another added on X: ‘Honestly need to know if Miranda just pretending to forget everything that happened before out of spite to everyone or what.’
While some complained about her forgetfulness, others praised the choice as ‘so in character’.
Nataliasdoll wrote: ‘Miranda pretending to not recognize Andy because her petty ass still hasn’t moved on from Andy leaving her WALK WITH ME NOW.’
‘Miranda Priestly simply does not have time for remembering two nobodies who once worked for her twenty years ago,’ defended RyanJL. ‘When the running joke leads half the people watching your trailer to think it’s a dementia storyline, it is slightly concerning.’
Reaptides asked: ‘Why are half [of you] saying dementia lmaooo can’t my toxic editor in chief have a little fun terrorising her emilys again?’
The joke isn’t the only concern fans have, as some said the entire trailer looks ‘flat’, an increasingly common complaint for films these days.
Dubbed the ‘Netflix look’ – despite this not being a Netflix project – many of us have noticed a trend in softer highlights and muted colour palettes.
Hootan Haghshenas, a digital colourist, previously told The Guardian that it’s a ‘specific stylistic direction’ towards a ‘naturalistic look’.
‘There is sometimes a misconception that darker images are purely a cost-saving strategy in lighting or production design,’ he said. ‘That can occasionally play a part, but it’s not necessarily true.
‘Even though it can appear effortless, there’s usually a huge amount of work behind achieving this kind of naturalistic look, just as much as in more traditional, stylised lighting.’
Despite some hesitancy and the general public exhaustion over sequels, fans seem reasonably excited when it comes to Devil Wears Prada 2.
‘I’m seated but the colors of the movie wow painful to watch,’ said Aliciaottt.
‘This is the best thing to happen since Oscar De La Renta did a collection of cerulean gowns,’ declared Jess Barton.
Sharing various outfits Miranda wears in the trailer, MabukSinema said: ‘We’ve seen enough, give mama Meryl her flowers already for gagging us with these looks.’
Platherhythm added: ‘This looks like so much fun, idk why people are always so strict and against fun. Yeah, not everything needs a sequel but this one does idc.
‘One of the coolest movies of all times having a sequel after 20 years is iconic af.’
The original film was released on June 30, 2006, and garnered huge acclaim with Meryl nominated for an Academy Award, Bafta, and Critics Choice.
She won the best actress in a musical or comedy at the Golden Globes, with the film grossing $13million in its first week and $326million worldwide.
Speaking about the film’s legacy to Vanity Fair, Anne Hathaway shared: ‘I didn’t realise it was gonna have such a lasting impression, so I didn’t realise it was gonna leave such a legacy.
‘Not the way it’s sort of woven into the culture and it’s become such a touchstone for so many people.’
The Devil Wears Prada 2 is slated for cinematic release on May 1, 2026.
