Doctor Who fans are speculating that the heartwrenching storyline of Rose Tyler being trapped in a parallel universe could be resurrected.
Since the 15th Doctor, Ncuti Gatwa’s shock regeneration into Billie Piper in the season two finale last year, chatter over where showrunner Russell T Davies will take the hit BBC sci-fi show next has been bubbling away.
It was confirmed that the show will return for a Christmas special in 2026, but no details of the plot have yet been revealed.
Still, there are many directions the series could take with Billie’s return from taking up the mantle of the 16th Doctor, to regenerating at the end of a special, to only making a fleeting cameo. Or, not being the titular Time Lord at all.
Whovians believe the biggest clue yet for what to expect might have just dropped after an in-universe blog post from UNIT was uploaded at the end of last week, discussing the woman of the hour herself, Rose Tyler.

The post marked the 20th anniversary of Aliens of London, the fourth episode of the 2005 reboot, in which companion Rose returns home only to discover she has accidentally been missing for one whole year (thanks to a Tardis miscalculation).
That alone wouldn’t be suspicious, but certainly the timing to dedicate a post to Rose over such a niche event when she’s the face of the 2026 Christmas special is enough to turn people’s heads.
Then we get into the content. The blog post acknowledges that Rose is no longer on Earth after she became trapped in a parallel universe (known as Pete’s World) in the devastating season two finale, Doomsday.
Her character had an epic, and widely-loved, romance with 10th Doctor David Tennant that came to a bittersweet conclusion in the 2008 season four finale, Journey’s End.
In that episode, she ended up with an exact clone known as the Metacrisis Doctor to live out her life in this parallel universe.
You would think that would be the end of it, but in 2023, David Tennant returned as the 14th Doctor, where he is now living in Donna’s (Catherine Tate) back garden.
So, with the surprise return of Billie Piper and a confirmed in-universe Doctor with David Tennant’s face, could a reunion truly be on the cards? Especially with Russell at the helm.
As the blog post mentions, Rose is a ‘complex space-time event’ (did we mention a version of her also returned as the Moment in the 50th anniversary).
They even go so far as to say ‘keep an eye out’, implying they might be expecting her to crop back up.
What does Metro think of bringing the Doctor and Rose's romance back
Senior TV Reporter and Doctor Who lover Asyia Iftikhar weighs in…
I love the Doctor and Rose – and the highs and lows of their universe-hopping love story – as much as the next fan, but the climactic finale in Journey’s End is too good an ending to risk spoiling.
After several seasons of the doomed pair grappling with their love for one another in the face of world-ending threats and the Doctor’s immortality, all seems lost.
So, to create the Meta Crisis Doctor, who has the heart of the soul of the Time Lord with a human lifespan, is… a wonderfully fitting ending for Rose and a way for her to find peace and closure in Pete’s World.
Reviving it for a one-off special feels like a gamble and not one I’m sure the show can afford. Especially when I’m passionate about it, looking forward, using Ncuti’s momentum, rather than back.
Still, if this does end up being showrunner Russell T Davies’ final episode, then I wouldn’t be averse to a sweet trip down memory lane and a victory lap for the writer using two of his most popular Who characters.
The number of clues and coincidences is enough to convince some fans that this storyline could be revived one last time.
‘So she’s 100% playing Rose Tyler in the Christmas special. Time to bring back David Tennant as Fourteen to find her,’ CameronBalling3 wrote on X.
‘I’d love one more episode of David Tennant & Billie Piper and a new ending for the Doctor/Rose,’ Meredith JJacobs shared.
‘Ok, this absolutely confirms that Billie is Rose in the special. I’m betting “The Lost Doctor” is the title,’ Dustin Phillips speculated.
‘Calling it now, Billie isn’t the Doctor because she’s Rose from the Meta universe and she’s somehow swapped places with the Doctor,’ AnghastheTardis said.
As for what we actually know about the upcoming special, information is scant.
Legendary Doctor Who composer Murray Gold teased in a recent interview:’I know that Russell’s written, I think, multiple versions depending on certain outcomes… So that’s all I really know, and I’m not sure I’m even supposed to know that.’
Meanwhile, in a chat with BBC Newsbeat, Russell said: ‘I know what happens, but I’d better write it down soon in case I get run over by a bus,’ adding that he left BBC bosses with ‘jaws agape, loving it’.
Doctor Who returns on Christmas Day 2026.
