It’s February and we’re already talking about the Doctor Who Christmas special – more specifically, the multiple versions that are said to have been written.
Russell T Davies has created several iterations of the festive episode, according to show legend Murray Gold.
The long-time composer, who defined the music of the revival series, spilled Russell’s plans for December 2026.
He said: ‘I know Russell’s written, I think, multiple versions depending on certain outcomes.’
Murray made the statement on Half the Picture podcast in response to being asked by host Billy Barnell if he had started working on the Christmas special yet.

After revealing what Russell had been up to, Murray said: ‘That’s all I really know, and I’m not sure I’m even supposed to know that.
‘I normally do a very good job of not finding things out.
‘I make my job of keeping secrets very easy by never finding out in the first place.’
Viewers were left with unanswered questions at the end of season 15, after Ncuti Gatwa appeared to morph into Who-star Billie Piper.
It is still yet to be confirmed whether the former companion will be the next Doctor – all we know if she will be returning to the Tardis in some capacity.
Speaking about the show more broadly, Murray said: ‘I think we’re at a precarious point for Doctor Who.
‘I am hopeful that it’s all going to be the start of a wonderful new era.
‘I really hope that’s what happens.’
Murray composed the music for the revival seasons when Billie played Rose Tyler from 2005-2006 alongside Christopher Eccleston as the Doctor.
He announced his departure after series 10 and returned for the 60th anniversary specials in 2023, staying on to compose the 14th and 15th seasons with Russell back at the helm.
Production for the 2026 return of the BBC sci-fi series is expected to begin at some point this year.
Back in December, Russell told Newsbeat they hadn’t started work on it yet. He admitted: ‘I better write it down soon in case I get run over by a bus.’
The showrunner revealed that he’d shared his plan with BBC bosses and they were left with ‘jaws agape, loving it.’
Doctor Who is available to watch on BBC iPlayer and will return Christmas 2026. Half the Picture podcast is available to stream on Spotify, Apple Podcasts, and YouTube.
