EastEnders will explore the developing world of AI in a new storyline soon, as Patrick Trueman (Rudolph Walker) searches for a way to manage his grief.

Patrick’s son Anthony Trueman (Nicholas Bailey) was killed by daughter Jasmine Fisher (Indeyarna Donaldson-Holness) on Christmas Day.

Her mum Zoe Slater (Michelle Ryan) is currently behind bars for the crime, and Kat Slater (Jessie Wallace) believes Chrissie Watts (Tracy-Ann Oberman) framed her.

Amid the complexities of this story, an old man is dealing with the fact his son has been killed.

As part of the BBC’s AI Unpacked Week, an overwhelmed Patrick is going to feature in a story that sees him use an AI software to try and cope with his grief.

Patrick will become reliant on the site, and the plot will also explore the effects it has on the legendary character as his reliance on the software intensifies.

New research conducted by the BBC shows that AI use is rapidly rising. AI Unpacked aims to explore what you need to know about the software and the skills to navigate the future.

As well as EastEnders, programmes that will explore AI include The Capture, a documentary series featuring Hannah Fry, plus a BBC Panorama episode about whether robots will eventually take over our jobs.

On Radio 2, Jeremy Vine will explore the use of AI in therapy, and will speak to listeners to discover if they’ve ever been counselled by artificial intelligence.

On Radio 5 Live, presenters will unpack the rise of AI, including the risks, and how the technology is quickly changing our lives.

Kate Phillips, Chief Content Officer said: ‘AI Unpacked Week builds on the BBC’s work on educating UK audiences about AI and its place in society. Across TV, radio and digital we have a range of dedicated AI programming to inform and excite audiences about the rise of this new technology. From grief tech in EastEnders, to a Panorama special on the advance of robotics, to BBC Bitesize guides for teenagers.

‘As we stand at the brink of a major technological revolution, the BBC will play a vital role in being a trusted destination for advice, insight, and engagement for all audiences.’
