Ireland, meanwhile, beaten on opening night by France, were givn an almighty scare against Italy, but prevailed with a narrow victory.
Both sides are in need of a victory to keep their respective title hopes alive, with England opting to make a change and hand the talented Henry Pollock his first Test start.
