Gordon Ramsay’s wife Tana is going back to study and tackle a new career.
The wife of the celebrity chef is a trained Montessori early childhood teacher who was working at a nursery in Chiswick when she met Gordon in the early 1990s.
Although she was dating one of his friends at the time, after both of their respective relationships ended, Gordon and Tana got together.
They then married in 1996 and welcomed their first child, Megan, the following year, which also came around the same time he opened his first restaurant, Restaurant Gordon Ramsay.
They are now parents to Megan, 27, twins Jack and Holly, 26, Tilly, 24, Oscar, six, and two-year-old Jesse.
Over the years Tana has also released several cookbooks and previously opened a beauty salon in London. She also competed on Dancing on Ice in 2010.
However, the mum-of-six is now going back to school to study to become a midwife.
‘Tana has been working on the next steps in her career since last year and has enrolled in a London-based university to study midwifery,’ a source told The Sun.
‘Tana’s friends and family weren’t surprised when she said she wanted to pursue this career.
‘She used to be a nursery school teacher and is a fantastic, kind and empathetic mum and friend. Tana’s the person you’d want at your side if you were giving birth.Midwifery feels like the perfect match for her.’
They continued: ‘She is absolutely revelling in the challenge and wants to give back and support mums. Gordon and their children couldn’t be more supportive or proud of her.’
It takes three years to become a qualified midwife if studying full-time, or two years for registered nurses. The courses also combine academic study with hands-on placements in NHS hospitals.
Once qualified, students must register with the Nursing and Midwifery Council.
Tana has also been a long-time advocate for midwives and two years ago joined her husband to surprise Angela Nisbett with a Pride of Britain award after she assisted mothers who had lost their babies through stillbirth.
Gordon and Tana lost their son Rocky at 20 weeks after she suffered a miscarriage in 2016.
During the awards, Gordon emotionally detailed their own experience with stillbirth when speaking to Agnes.
‘Six years ago, we experienced that, so we couldn’t be happier to be here,’ he told her.
Meanwhile Tana said afterwards: ‘Who she is and what she has done for so, so many women is incredible, impactful, and exactly why she has been given this award.
‘Gordon and I were really honoured to be a part of her special surprise, and to talk about our own journey with a real understanding about the importance of the immediate support parents receive in those heartbreaking first moments.’
Tana has also previously spoken about feeling resentment at having to do the bulk of childcare with her and Gordon’s eldest children while he built his career.
Although they’d agreed she would take on most of the duties while he worked, Tana explained: ‘When I say resent, it’s just sometimes I’d be like “Do you need to sit on the sofa and rest and watch the news and have 10 minutes to yourself? Because I can’t do that”,’ she recalled.
‘I’d be lying if I said, “No it’s fine I took this on” and there were times it felt really hard, but you get over it.’
Although they’ve now been married for nearly 30 years, Tana has previously admitted she didn’t warm to Gordon at all when they first met – calling him a ‘complete arrogant arse’.
However, they eventually married in 1996 when she was 21 and he was 29.
Last month the couple – as well as several of their children – appeared in the Netflix documentary Being Gordon Ramsay.
The six-part series followed the celebrity chef on his most ambitious project to date – launching five brands at the top of the 22 Bishopsgate skyscraper in central London.
They included Lucky Cat, a Michelin-starred Chef’s Table experience called High, a cookery school and a rooftop bar.
He will also open his Bread Street Kitchen and bar on the 59th floor next month.
