Greggs unveils brand new sausage roll flavour to complete its ‘iconic trilogy’

Over the years, the Greggs sausage roll has become a staple of British cuisine.

It’s reached legendary status, so much so that a whopping one million of them are sold every single day across the UK.

Flash forward to 2019, and the bakery chain introduced a vegan version of the classic pastry treat, and now a new twist is being added to the menu.

Greggs has unveiled a new Chicken Roll, which will be a permanent addition to all UK stores and is said to be the final component of an ‘iconic trilogy’.

Initially, it was thought to be nothing more than an April Fools’ Day prank, but the chain has confirmed it’s becoming a reality.

Described by the bakery business as a ‘seasoned chicken wrapped in layers of crisp, golden, glazed puff pastry’.

The Chicken Roll is set to launch on Thursday, April 9 and will cost £1.35 and contain 305 calories.

Speaking about the launch, a Greggs spokeswoman said: ‘They say the best things come in threes, and our iconic roll trilogy is no exception.

‘We can’t wait for our customers to experience the Chicken Roll as the ultimate headline act of our flaky franchise.’

To celebrate the completion of the ‘trilogy’, Greggs will be hosting a special event on Wednesday, April 8, in London.

There will be a party at 15 Bateman Street in Soho, with Chicken Rolls, as well as chicken-themed cocktails or mocktails and retro 90s decor.

Visitors will step inside a one-of-a-kind VHS video store before getting an exclusive first taste of the new product. 

The event will take place between 3:30 pm and 9 pm, and guests can book 20-minute slots, but the catch is that, in a nod to the trilogy theme, guests must arrive as part of a trio of friends or family.

The Chicken Roll isn’t the only new product Greggs has revealed of late.

The Hot Breakfast Wrap was introduced last week, filled with sausage, sweet-cured bacon, mature cheddar cheese, cheesy omelette, bechamel sauce, Heinz ketchup, and a crispy hash brown.

It’s available in select stores across Yorkshire as of April 2 to order from the counter or via Click+Collect, and fans say it’s going to give McDonald’s a ‘run for its money’.

A single wrap costs £3.95, or it can be purchased as part of Greggs’ breakfast deal, which includes a wrap and any hot drink, orange juice or water from £4.70.

The wrap will be available for a limited time as part of a trial; it’s unclear when it will be rolled out more widely across the UK.
