Eric Dane’s cause of death has been confirmed following the Grey’s Anatomy actor’s death at 53.

Dane died on February 19, his family confirmed, just 10 months after publicly revealing he had been diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS).

According to his death certificate, as obtained by People, the Euphoria star died of respiratory failure.

ALS is listed as an underlying cause.

Dane is survived by his wife, Rebecca Gayheart, and their two children, Billie Beatrice, 15, and Georgia Geraldine, 13.

He had also been in a four-year relationship with girlfriend Janell Shirtcliff since Gayheart filed for divorce after 14 years of marriage. However, she called off proceedings in March 2025, shortly before Dane revealed his diagnosis, to teach their kids to ‘show up for family’.

Announcing his death earlier this month, his loved ones shared in a statement: ‘With heavy hearts, we share that Eric Dane passed on Thursday afternoon following a courageous battle with ALS.’

They added that he spent his final days with Gayheart and their teenage children, ‘who were the centre of his world’.

‘He will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered always.

‘Eric adored his fans and is forever grateful for the outpouring of love and support he’s received.’
