A house in Detroit, Michigan, was destroyed by an explosion so strong it reduced the building to rubble and sent a shockwave that was felt several blocks away.

Residents in the area felt their homes shake and heard a ‘boom’ at around 11am local time.

Debris was sent flying into the street and over neighbouring buildings, leaving little of the original structure.

Fire officials say the house was vacant at the time and nobody was injured.

Neighbours told local news that they had smelled gas near the building.

Detroit Fire Department confirmed that one of the neighbours had reported their suspicion of a gas leak.

It’s not clear if anything was done in response to the concerns.

The building in question was in the 19400 block of Forrer Street.
