Formula 1 returns this weekend with the Azerbaijan Grand Prix where McLaren can wrap up the constructors’ championship in record time.

While the drivers’ championship is set to go down to the wire between Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris, it has been clear since the first races of the season that McLaren would retain their title.

The British team have won 12 of the 16 races so far in 2025 (seven for Piastri and five for Norris), while there has been no clear second-best team, with Ferrari, Mercedes and Red Bull in a close battle.

As a result they can win the constructors’ championship in Baku with, remarkably, seven races to spare, beating Red Bull’s record of six that was set just two years ago.

What do McLaren need to do to win the constructors’ championship in Azerbaijan?

Ahead of the Azerbaijan Grand Prix, McLaren have a whopping 617 points, ahead of Ferrari (280), Mercedes (260) and Red Bull (239).

Mathematically speaking, all three chasing teams can still win the championship but it is be the Scuderia’s results that McLaren will be keeping a close eye on.

Providing McLaren outscore Ferrari by nine points or more in Baku, they will win their 10th title.

They will also need to make sure they don’t get outscored by 12 points by Mercedes, or by 33 points by Red Bull, though these are highly unlikely – though not impossible – scenarios.

Should Piastri and Norris finish 1-2 or 1-3 they will be champions. Having achieved 10 such results so far this year, there is a very good chance it will be mission complete in Azerbaijan.

If they don’t succeed this weekend however, their next opportunity to clinch the title will be in Singapore in October.

Once they achieve their 10th constructors’ championship, McLaren will move to outright second on the all-time list, ahead of Williams.

They are still some way short of Ferrari however, who have won 16 titles, but none since 2008.

When combining drivers’ and constructors’ titles, the Italians still lead the way with 31 in total. By the end of the year, McLaren will have 23, ahead of Mercedes (17), Williams (16), Red Bull (14) and Lotus (13).
