A fire has ripped through a flat above a shop on a busy road next to Battersea Park.

Eight fire engines and 60 firefighters are tackling a blaze on Battersea Park Road.

The fire began sweeping through the second floor of a three-storey building at 2.28pm this afternoon.

The block has commercial properties on the ground floor and flats above.

Locals have been told to keep their windows and doors shut to avoid inhaling smoke billowing out of the fire.

Battersea Park Road is closed between the junctions of Queenstown Road and Havelock Terrace, causing severe disruption to motorists.

The London Fire Brigade has said the cause of the fire is unknown.
