I love you M&S, but we have to talk about this new Dippy Egg Cookie Cup

Marks & Spencer has been on a roll with its new product launches of late – from its ‘sensational’ gluten-free Colin the Caterpillar Cake to its hot cross buns.

And if you thought that was exciting, you haven’t seen anything yet, as the high street retailer has only just begun gearing up for Easter.

The Foodhalls are going to be filled with seasonal goodies over the coming weeks, with several new sweet treats set to hit the shelves – and one has just dropped.

M&S has just added to its viral Cookie Cup range, releasing a Dippy Egg Cookie Cup, inspired by its sell-out Dippy Egg Hot Cross Buns from 2025.

In case you missed them, or somehow managed to forget, the Dippy Egg Hot Cross buns were ‘phenomenal’ (according to me, myself, and I).

I tried the buns last year and couldn’t get enough, saying: ‘The cocoa buns are pillowy soft and rich, and the white chocolate filling is silky smooth but tastes a little custardy, making the whole thing oh so decadent. It’s like an indulgent pudding, but in a small snack-sized format.’

My colleague, Eleanor Noyce, agreed, hailing the buns a ‘divine’ snack, and shoppers were big fans too, clearing the shelves of them in record time.

Much to my own despair, M&S hasn’t yet revealed whether or not these buns will be making a comeback, but they have just unveiled a brand new twist on them, in the form of the Dippy Egg Cookie Cup.

What’s in the Dippy Egg Cookie Cup?

The dessert features a chocolate chip cookie base shaped into a cup and filled with a white chocolate-flavoured cheesecake and a vivid orange mango and passionfruit sauce, which creates the impression of a runny yolk.

The whole thing is then finished off with a shortbread biscuit, to dip into the middle, just as you would with a real dippy egg and soldiers (toast).

It’s priced at £3.20 from M&S and is currently available nationwide, though people are already going wild over them on social media, saying they ‘have to go’ get one immediately, so you’ll want to be quick if you’re planning to try this.

The Cookie Cup range first launched in June 2005 in three flavours – Raspberry & White Chocolate, Extremely Chocolatey, and Hazelnut Praline. Since the launch, the retailer has added several limited-edition options, including a Gingerbread & White Chocolate one at Christmas.

What does Metro’s specialist food writer think of the new Cookie Cup?

It looks amazing, but didn’t quite hit the spot (Picture: Courtney Pochin)

I had high hopes for this dessert, but M&S, I think we need to talk…

While the cookie cup itself is nice and chewy, the white chocolate filling is a far cry from cheesecake, being more akin to whipped cream. This is also exactly what it tastes like – sweet and creamy, but lacking in any real flavour.

I’m also sorry to say, the mango and passionfruit sauce tastes a little off – there was an initial tropical fruitiness to it, but the aftertaste was tangy and unpleasant.

Worst of all was the shortbread finger, which didn’t survive being refrigerated (despite it being a chilled dessert) and had turned into a stale, mushy mess on top. You definitely couldn’t dip that into anything.

I think this dessert could have been spectacular, and on the surface, it ticks all the right boxes, but sadly, it missed the mark for me.

That said, I’ve seen some rave reviews for this online, so I don’t know if I just got a dud one or if the Dippy Egg buns set the bar too high, but either way, I’m disappointed.
