The great and good of Hollywood will gather tomorrow for the 98th Academy Awards.

Yet on the other side of Tinsel Town last night, a rather different awards show took place.

The 46th Golden Raspberry Awards, also known as The Razzies, recognised the worst cinema had to offer in 2025, and there was one big winner.

The remake of War of the Worlds (2025) starring Ice Cube had the ignominy of winning five awards.

Those included Worst Picture, Worst Director, Worst Screenplay, Worst Remake, Rip-off or Sequel, and Ice Cube won Worst Actor.

The news will hardly come as a surprise to film fans. The War of the World’s remake was panned when it landed on Amazon Prime.

An adaptation of HG Well’s classic novel of the same name, War of the Worlds (2025)follows William “Will” Radford (Ice Cube), a member of the Department of Homeland Security, as he helps the Earth battle invading aliens.

The film’s main gimmick is that, unlike other adaptations, we see the events unfolding from the perspective of various phones, computers, and tablets on the scene.

The 46th Golden Raspberry Award Winners

Worst Picture: War of the Worlds

Worst Actor: Ice Cube (War of the Worlds)

Worst Actress: Rebel Wilson (Bride Hard)

Worst Supporting Actor: The Seven Artificial Dwarfs (Snow White)

Worst Supporting Actress: Scarlet Rose Stallone (Gunslingers)

Worst Director: Rich Lee (War of the Worlds)

Worst Screenplay: Kenny Golde and Marc Hyman (War of the Worlds)

Worst Screen Combo: The “Seven Artificial Dwarfs” (Snow White)

Sadly, this innovative technique didn’t impress critics.

The film is currently sitting at just 4% on Rotten Tomatoes and a shocking 6/100 on Metacritic.

Indeed, the film was criticised for being boring, badly acted, and for featuring a lot of Amazon product placement.

In his Variety review, Peter Debruge wrote witheringly: ‘Even with a Prime subscription, you have to sit through two minutes of ads to watch 90 more of what amounts to a feature-length commercial for all things Amazon.’

Is War of the Worlds (2025) that bad?

Our Deputy TV Editor, Tom Percival, shares his thoughts on War of the Worlds…

I’m one of those irritating people the internet warned you about, who actively seek out bad movies to watch.

That’s why I’ve seen films like Flyin’ Ryan and The Incredible Bulk… never heard of them? I don’t blame you, they’re terrible.

So, when I heard that the new War of the Worlds movie was a grade-A stinker, I was very excited to watch it.

Sadly, it was a huge let-down.

While it is as dreadful as everyone says, it’s dreadful in an artless way.

It’s just lazy, dull and soulless.

Paul Mount, in his Starburst magazine review, said the film as ‘torturous,’ describing it as ‘an endless 90 minutes of glitchy video clips, military stock footage, glad-to-be-doing-something actors running through the street waving a camera in front of their faces and pretending to be scared.’

Perhaps unsurprisingly, the film was included on several lists of the worst movies of 2025.

Despite this, not everyone loathed the film. Entertainment Weekly were quite positive in their review, calling it ‘stupid’ but ‘fun’ while The Verge said ‘it’s so bad it’s good’.

The other big winner at the Razzies last night was Snow White, which won Worst Supporting Actor and Worst Screen Combo – specifically, the CGI dwarves won both awards.

If you want to check out War of the Worlds (2025), it’s available to watch on Prime Video now.
