Were the London Bombings of 2005 simply 'perpetrated by people blinded by a fanatical belief system'

May I respond in horror to JWA Caley’s wildly inaccurate and hugely offensive assertion (MetroTalk, Wed) that the 7/7 attacks were ‘indirect retaliation’ for our involvement in Iraq and Afghanistan.

They were terror attacks perpetrated by people blinded by a fanatical belief system who hate us and our way of life.

We are seeing more and more of these apologists for terror, notably during the recent by-election in Gorton and Denton, Greater Manchester, where the Ariana Grande concert attack was excused as a reaction to far-right extremism. It needs to be called out. Chris H, London

‘Stop suggesting Trump is in the Epstein files’, says reader

Can readers please stop suggesting that Donald Trump is implicated in the Epstein Files as having done anything illegal or immoral? There has been no evidence of that so far, and if Epstein had any proof of such a thing, it’s unlikely that he would even have been arrested. Owen, London

‘Trump spent the last few months telling everyone that his allies are useless’

I find it so amusing when Trump slams the UK and other countries for not backing him up over Iran.

Isn’t this the same Trump who has spent the last few months telling everyone that his allies are useless, using it as justification to invade Greenland.

And isn’t this the same Trump who has spent the last year doing his best to stay out of the war in Ukraine because it’s ‘not our fight’?

Trump is a bully, who is quite happy to take on tiny countries and insult and belittle anyone he thinks weaker.

But like all bullies, he is a coward – hence he stays well clear of Ukraine, because he is afraid of Putin. Like all cowards and bullies, he would never punch someone who would punch him back harder. SB, Southend-On-Sea

Other ‘forget that it was under Obama’s presidency that Osama Bin Laden was brought to book’

In arguing for the slaughter of Iranians that was always going to be inevitable under the US bombing, Chris (MetroTalk, Tue) says at least Trump is acting against the regime, unlike ex-president Barack Obama.

He forgets that it was under Obama’s presidency that Osama Bin Laden was brought to book. Similar covert operations could have been
used against the Iranian leadership but Trump and Israel’s Benjamin Netanyahu have extended their genocide of Palestinians further. Martin J Phillips, Leeds

‘The US/British coup in 1953 ousted the elected, secular, democratic and nationalist Iranian government and put the Shah in power’

Julie (MetroTalk, Tue) prettifies the record of the Shah – installed after the West’s last exercise in meddling in Iranian affairs.

The US/British coup in 1953 ousted the elected, secular, democratic and nationalist government and put the Shah in power.

This original undemocratic intervention completely changed Iran’s history. The Shah quickly became a despot, sustained by brutal repression. His will was law, his policies were not to be questioned – and all opposition and criticism was treated as treason, stamped out without mercy by his secret police.

Outside interventions do not produce democracy – and Trump’s attack on Iran will be no different.
Will Podmore, London

What will Government’s reaction to fuel crisis be?

In light of the AA’s advice to limit driving in light of potential fuel shortages and price hikes on the forecourt caused by the war against Iran (Metro, Tue), is it time to revisit the conversation around the oil crisis of 1967 when fuel rationing was discussed in parliament. Also, during the 1973 fuel crisis, the government imposed 50mph speed limits on all motorways and delimited roads. Peter, Wolverhampton

Is US represented best by ‘Hollywood, blue jeans and telephones’?

RA (MetroTalk, Tue) states they have a ‘long-standing dislike of the US and all it stands for’.

Can we assume RA has never bought a record by an American artist, watched a Hollywood movie, worn blue jeans or used any modern appliances such as the telephone? Steven Ward, Sheffield
