Ever wondered what happened to Cillit Bang’s very own Barry Scott? Well, eight years after he vanished, we finally have some answers. Kind of.

Anyone who has watched any TV in the UK during the past two decades will know the catchphrase ‘Bang, and the dirt is gone!’ declared by cleaning product company Cillit Bang’s longtime mascot, Barry Scott.

Played by actor Neil Burgess for 13 years between 2005 and 2018, the star joins the ranks of the chirping comparison website meerkats, the eyebrow-dancing Cadbury kids and the ‘Oh yes’ Churchill dog in the British TV advert hall of fame.

Barry’s celebrity status in the British psyche was so great that he was the subject of death hoaxes, conspiracy theories and actual fake obituaries after he was wiped clean from screens.

But like any stubborn stain, his presence lingered in the social media comment section, with viewers begging for the return of the bold and brash bleach salesman.

Like any good company trying to flog its wares, Cillit Bang knows nostalgia is a powerful currency, and just like that, ar Barry has risen from the ashes to greet his admiring public.

In a new TikTok advert titled Coming Clean, Neil transformed into his bathroom cleaning alter ego for a tongue-in-cheek mockumentary about his mystery whereabouts and his passion for shouting ‘bang’.

‘Barry Scott rose to fame with his onscreen debut in the Cillit Bang adverts. But he retreated from the public eye in 2018, leaving almost a decade of unanswered questions. Now he’s ready to come clean,’ the voiceover re-introducing our advert gamechanger declared.

Cue ‘cleaning enthusiast’ and ‘cult dirtbuster’ Barry.

Cleaning has always been a big part of my life, even before I could walk. It wasn’t always about the money. Spreading the word about tackling tough stains, that’s what it was all about for me,’ he told the camera alongside a montage of his cleaning.

He then revealed his Cillit Bang-themed happy space and even took a jab at the famed meerkats.

Answering the million-dollar question, where he has been, he quipped he’s ‘tried hundreds of jobs’, like being a scarecrow or a race starter, even a cleaning influencer.

‘I thought after almost a decade, it was time to address some questions. You know I’m still here. I’m still alive, and in the nation’s hearts,’ he added, before the advert ended with the promise of more to come.

Naturally, Barry fans (who amongst us isn’t one) were delighted at this surprise comeback.

‘Cillit Bang ads were the only ones I ever enjoyed as a child. I still say bang and the dirt is gone while cleaning,’ TikTok user Santa’s Lawyer wrote.

‘Genuinely an urban legend at this point,’ Cool fella shared.

‘This is the greatest day of my life,’ PaulJohnson echoed.

‘The people need Barry Scott more than ever,’ Loz declared.

One user, Beauteainthewild, even shared the bright idea: ‘I want to see a celebrity big brother just with these tv personalities. imagine Barry Scott, Howard from Halifax, Scary Mary from Phones4u….’

As for what Neil has actually been getting up to for the past eight years, the real answer is not entirely clear.

He does have a YouTube channel with 1k subscribers. His most recent video is from a year ago, in which he gave a sarcastic response to those wondering how he was cast in the Cillit Bang commercials over Brad Pitt.

In a statement discussing his return to the iconic brand, he shared: ‘I’m unbelievably excited to be back with my beloved Cillit Bang, obliterating tough stains as we go.

‘For the last ten years, I’ve been watching the speculation around my disappearance

‘So once the call came in, I knew I had to come back.’

Meanwhile, Cillit Bang’s Xin Na Zeng added: ‘After a long break, 2026 feels like the perfect time to get the nation back celebrating those “Bang, and the dirt is gone!” moments once more.’
