It might only be February, but supermarkets are already starting to prep for the second biggest foodie event of the year: Easter.
Over the last few weeks, those with an eager eye might’ve noticed seasonal chocolate starting to filter onto the shelves. We’re talking Easter eggs, speckled eggs, bunny-themed treats…the lot.
Now, M&S has launched a product that fans are comparing to the classic Cadbury Creme Egg, and, trust us when we say, it’s opulent.
The website’s description reads: ‘Light-hearted, gooey and hard to resist, our Sunny Side Up Whips are a cheeky take on a chocolate classic.
‘These milk chocolate treats are filled with fluffy white mallow and a zesty orange sauce, and finished with a white chocolate topper that looks just like a sunny-side-up egg.’
M&S fans are practically salivating over the Easter treat, as over on Facebook, Sylvia Shilliam described it as ‘mouthwatering,’ while Terri Watts said it was ‘absolutely delicious.’
‘These are elite compared to a Creme Egg,’ Rachel Whitmarsh penned, and Allison Blenkins joked ‘my waist just got bigger looking at these.’
Over on Instagram, the @thehungryfoodmonsters said that the ‘thick milk chocolate is seriously smooth,’ but noted that they would’ve loved ‘a bit more sauce for an extra citrusy punch.’
‘I’m pretty sure we could feel our teeth dissolving from the sweetness,’ they joked, while @allyson.boyle said that they ‘taste even more delicious than they look.’
Not everyone was covninced though, as Sherrie Woodward asked, ‘why is everything always orange?’ and Donna Pugh said ‘nothing beats a Creme Egg.’
What were Metro's thoughts on the M&S Sunny Side Up Whips?
I’m a complete fiend for anything that’s chocolate orange flavoured, so I popped down to my local M&S on my lunch break to get a taste.
My wallet wasn’t best pleased as these were slightly pricey at £5 a pop, but, putting my eternal trust in M&S, I decided to bite the bullet.
I wasn’t at all disappointed. I’m a huge fan of a walnut whip, and these are laid out in a similar way: with a thick chocolate shell, a marshmallow filling, and a crunchy top.
Finished with a yolk-like topping and a white chocolate shell, this was a silky delight from start to finish.
It’s much more decadent than a Creme Egg, and it’s technically slightly different as it’s only got the yellow yolk inside rather than the white, but as a bougier version, I endorse it.
The chocolate was so thick that I was worried I would lose a tooth when I first bit into it, but all of the various elements worked well.
If you’re prepared to shell out £1.25 per egg, then M&S’s treat is well worth the investment. The only thing stopping it from getting full marks is the fact that the Creme Egg is too iconic to ever be replaced, IMO.
Verdict: 8/10.
This isn’t the only Easter treat M&S has cooked up of late. Speckled Egg Cookies are back in the in-store bakery after the company faced ‘overwhelming demand’ for the goodies.
Priced at £3.25 for a pack of five cookies, the baked good is made with the signature M&S cookie dough and features a combination of milk and white chocolate buttons, cornflakes and Speckled Eggs.
Packets of Speckled Eggs have also returned to stores, and customers have hailed them as being ‘much better’ than Cadbury Mini Eggs.
