Margot Robbie has admitted she managed what many would deem impossible – once getting kicked out of the infamous London nightclub Infernos.

The Australian actress, 35, may now be playing one of British literature’s best-known figures in the soon-to-be released Wuthering Heights, but a decade ago she was embracing UK culture in a completely different way.

Rising to fame starring on the soap Neighbours, Margot moved to the US for a few years before relocating to London in 2014.

Over the years Margot has spoken about her love for Clapham and the South London neighbourhood’s best-known nightclub – which has been running since 1985 and become a staple stop on a night out for Antipodeans for decades.

However, Margot has now revealed that she was actually once thrown out of Infernos.

Speaking on the Table Manners podcast, the actress told hosts Jessie and Lennie Ware how her housemates had once told her about the nightclub and how it was ‘impossible to get kicked out’.

‘We were doing a job in Belgium where I met them (her soon to be housemates), and they would tell me about the infamous Infernos,’ she recalled.

At the time Margot’s friends told her how ‘fun’ the venue was. They also explained to her: ‘You can’t get kicked out of there, you can do anything in Infernos, and you can’t get kicked out.’

‘And I was like, “Wow, that sounds like paradise”,’ she said. ‘And so, we all had a weekend in London when the job was done. And of course, we went to Infernos, and within about 15 minutes, we got kicked out.’

Margot detailed that as they were getting ‘dragged out’ by security, she was screaming: ‘But this is Infernos, you can’t get kicked out of Infernos.’

‘And the bouncer was like, “Look, we allow most things, but when your friend does [redacted], then we kick you out”. And I was like, “okay, fair enough!”.’

When probed on whether she’d been kicked out of many clubs by Jessie, the actress confessed to being booted out of ‘most of the clubs in Clapham’.

‘Yeah, for a while we were banned at a number of places!’ she added.

Margot then explained that the group of friends she’d met in Belgium then all decided to move in together.

‘We were like: “Wouldn’t it be funny if we all lived together?”. Someone said: “But you don’t live in London”, and I said: “I don’t live anywhere. I’ll move”.

‘I had gone back to America at that point, and so we were looking online, and the guys were like, “Oh, it’s a sign this place is down the road from Infernos”. So, we literally signed our lease just because it was down the road from Infernos.’

Old social media photos have previously given a glimpse of Margot’s life in London – where she lived with six others, including now-husband Tom Ackerley, as well as her production company Lucky Chap co-founders Sophia Kerr and Josey McNamara. She’s previously affectionately referred to their share house as ‘The Manor’ and reportedly encouraged the crew to all get a ‘house tattoo’ with matching designs.

In 2022 Margot was asked at the premiere of her film Babylon which time in her personal life could be turned into a blockbuster film, to which she responded: ‘I don’t know if any of my life is worthy of a movie to be honest. Maybe my first year living in London, that could be.’

Although already being a household name thanks to her starring role alongside Leonardo DiCaprio in the 2013 film The Wolf of Wall Street, Margot favoured a ‘student life’, while living in Clapham.

‘Those were the best days of my life,’ she previously said. ‘For me, where you live and what you do have to be simplistic and comfortable, otherwise how are you possibly going to relax?

‘Clapham has always felt unassuming in the sense you’re just left alone to get on with who you are, and that’s perfect for me.’

What is it about Infernos that attracts so many Aussies?

For decades, Infernos has been opening its doors to a stream of people looking for a truly unique night out.

The carpeted nightclub on Clapham High Street has featured in the Inbetweeners Movie, been the spot for many a drunken hook-up in the kissing corner, allowed some to spill their secrets in the confession booth and once hosted a huge fish tank next to the dancefloor (the fish were removed and rehomed in 2023 after the club received an ‘influx’ of complaints).

However it’s also become an assembly point for Aussies and Kiwis who have moved over and set up shop in South West London. No-one quite knows why there’s such a strong love for Infernos for the Antipodeans (including myself), however many a night out there has been justified with: ‘If it’s good enough for Margot, it’s obviously good enough for us.’ In recent years the nightclub has even acknowledged its most famous attendee, installing a Clapham Heritage plaque dedicated to the Aussie actress. It reads: ‘Margot Robbie. Star of stage and screen. Actress, icon, dancing queen. Forever Infernos.’

Even if you only step foot inside Infernos once, it’s a rite of passage experience for many. The venue has also become a go-to spot for many official Aussies and Kiwis events, including a recent Aussies in London quiz night (attended by yours truly, who was part of the event’s winning team). While Margot was told it was nearly impossible to get kicked out of the nightclub, security staff nearly got up in arms that night when a truly bizarre Aussie ritual took place – men stood up and dropped their trousers to their ankles while dancing to the 1971 song Eagle Rock by Daddy Cool. Just another night at Infernos…

A few years ago, a friend who used to attend house parties the group would host told The Daily Mail that the housemates loved a drinking game and got through a tonne of beer – which was ‘plentiful in an otherwise empty fridge’. After partying at Infernos, they’d then nurse their hangovers the next day on Clapham Common.

‘I was like a naughty schoolgirl. It was my first time living in London and I wanted to try every pub,’ Margot once said of this time.

‘It seems crazy to spend a huge amount of money on things you don’t need. If I were a waitress, I’d probably have the exact same lifestyle. I’d go to the same clubs I go to already, live with the same housemates, hang out with the same people. I’m pretty frugal.’

Her The Legend of Tarzan co-star Alexander Skarsgard, also once said of her: ‘She was living in a house with six other people, kind of a frat-house vibe, and on weekends she’d go to Amsterdam and sleep in bunk beds in a youth hostel, or to some music festival in northern England and sleep in a tent. She’s not precious at all.’

It was in The Manor that romance also blossomed with Tom – who was raised in Guildford and began his film career appearing in three Harry Potter films, before pursuing work behind the scenes.

‘We kept it a secret, because we weren’t really taking it seriously: “Oh, whatever, we’re just mates”. And then everyone found out. Our house turned into The Jerry Springer Show for a moment. Everyone was, like: “No! This is going to ruin our group!” But the dust settled, and it was all good,’ she once said of the early days of their relationship.

The couple went on to move to their own place in West London before relocating to Los Angeles in 2017. After getting married in Australia a year earlier, they went on to welcome a son in 2024.

Margot once also famously declared: ‘I seem to love a lot of British things. I love Harry Potter, I love my husband and I love Love Island!’

During the Table Manners interview, Margot also spoke about befriending her local off-license owners and inviting them to a movie premiere.

‘The off-license across from our house, shout out to Johnny and Neil, who ran the offy across the road from us. They never believed I was famous,’ she explained.

‘I invited them to a premiere one time when I did a movie with Will Smith (2016’s Focus), and I was like, Johnny and Neil, I’d love for you to come. I’ve got a premiere.’

However, the owners weren’t quite convinced and ‘didn’t believe’ her despite the actress showing them an invitation with a photo of her next to Will.

‘And I said, “just come to the premiere and see for yourself.” They didn’t come. They now know that I work in the movies, and sometimes we go back and visit, just to say hi,’ she added.
